Personal Reflection

PERSONAL INSIGHTSDuring my placement at Pivot, I gained valuable knowledge about the intricacies of evidence-based design research and its application in real-world projects. I learned the importance of conducting comprehensive research, in both data visualization and user experience design, to understand user needs and identify trends that inform design decisions.

I gained insights into the principles of human-centered design and how they can be applied to create impactful visualizations that resonate with its’ viewers. Understanding the foundation of design thinking and the importance of empathy in the design process has enriched my perspective on the role of designers, like myself, in using design as a tool to communicate and address societal issues.

LEARNING OUTCOMESThis project was a pivotal experience in understanding the intersection of design, data, and storytelling, while bridging the gap between information delivery and connection. It honed my skills in managing large-scale datasets, designing for diverse platforms, and effectively communicating complex issues through visuals. I learned how to transform abstract statistics into a tool for awareness and advocacy, through design. If given more time, I would have considered making these visuals interactive, or animated, to add another layer of communication to enforce its’ story-telling approach.

SPECIAL THANKS
Special thanks to Ian Chalmers, Brenda Little and Lauren Levy for their ongoing support and trust in my creativity and design abilities. I am grateful for the opportunities they provided and the welcoming and collaborative environment they created.
